Sprung from, and deeply engaged in the independent music community as well as the anarchist and animal liberation-movement of Gothenburg, here’s Sweden’s new hope; ANCHOR!
Rising from the ruins of sadly missed bands such as DAMAGE CONTROL and SET MY PATH.
Formed, not only to entertain but also to provoke critical thought and inspire action ANCHOR threw themselves into the fray on a 16 day parade through northern europe with Germany’s finest, RITUAL only two months after the bands birth.

songwriting and sharpening their live performance, but striving for

APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT / WARTORN - Appalachian Terror Unit/Wartorn (split) CD (Profane Existence )
This tour-edition split CD that contains the tracks from APPALACHIAN TERROR UNIT's
"Armageddon Won't Be Brought By the Gods..." EP (Exist 096) and WARTORN's sold-out
"Prey for Salvation" EP (Exist 099.5). A.T.U.'s sound has been compared to a modern
day version of NAUSEA with crunching crust-core music and angry female vocals. WARTORN
are made up from members of WORDS THAT BURN and CHOOSE YOUR POISON and play a brutally
powerful take on Scandinavian crust: something like STATE OF FEAR meets WOLFBRIGADE.
These are two of the hardest working / hardest touring bands on Profane Existence Records
and such a match up was inevitable. This CD version of their latest EP's was in
coincidence with their joint East Coast tour in November 2007 and features all new artwork
by Marald. Both bands have plans for full-length releases in 2008 and this is an excellent

ARES KINGDOM - Firestorms And Choas CD (Nuclear War Now)
If a band’s status in the underground metal scene were based on skill,
artistry, integrity, and innovation, Ares Kingdom would be heralded as
the most important underground metal band in existence by anyone
familiar with this genre of music. Unfortunately, such attributes rarely
form the basis for the opinions of the masses. Nonetheless, for those
who can appreciate their genius, Ares Kingdom are regarded as one of the
greatest bands currently active in the scene. Their music, held together
by the incomparable guitar playing of Chuck Keller, retains a healthy
reverence for metal history while also exploring other territory less
traveled. Perhaps Ares Kingdom are not given the respect they deserve
because their music is simply impossible to categorize. One might be
tempted to merely call it deathrash, but that would be far too
simplistic a statement of the band’s intentions and influences. Ares
Kingdom also appropriate elements of death and black metal into their
structure and style for a result that is unique and wholly effective.
"Firestorms and Chaos" compiles all of the non-album material released
to date by Ares Kingdom. Featured here are the self-titled demo
(recorded when the band was only a two piece consisting of Chuck Keller
on vocals and guitars and Mike Miller on drums), the Chaosmongers Alive
EP (recorded live in studio and featuring the full lineup including Alex
Blume on vocals and Doug Overbay on bass), as well as the ‘Firestorm
Redemption’ and ‘Failsafe’ 12" EPs which included B-sides not available
on the "Return to Dust" album. For anyone who already has all of these
releases, this CD is merely for convenience purposes. For those
uninitiated souls that have yet to discover the power and majesty of
Ares Kingdom, this CD may serve as an introduction to their apocalyptic
world.

This band really needs no introduction. They pretty much rule. There are a few bands that can
change singers and it doesn't really affect their sound, or their fans judgment on them. ICED
EARTH is one of those bands. On this record they're fronted by ex-Judas Priest, Winters Bane,
Beyond Fear, etc., vocalist Tim "RIPPER" Owens. Here's what THE METAL OBSERVER has to say:
Kicking off with the „Star Spangled Banner“ (Sounds very KISS like, another big Schaffer influence)
„Declaration Day“ offers Owens the chance to prove his quality and within ten seconds the name
of Barlow is despatched to ICED EARTH history. His voice is an almost perfect match for the
titanic riffing and pounding drums. Strangely we get hit with the first power ballad rather
early but no matter as „When The Eagle Cries“ is first class ICED EARTH complete with catchy
soaring chorus. The album’s first single, „The Reckoning (Don’t Tread On Me)“ complete with
„Master Of Puppets“ riff intensity could easily have sat on „Horror Show“ and displays the
hallmark Schaffer guitar style. „Green Face“ and „Attila“ are nods to the old days of ICED
EARTH and features many a riff that lurked on „Night Of The Storm Rider” and „Burnt Offerings“
„Red Baron/ Blue Max“ is a corker of a Metal song with Owens’ on fine form screaming out the
chorus in true JUDAS PRIEST style. The second ballad sees „Hollow Man“ follow on from „Horror
Show”’s „Ghost Of Freedom”, a mainly acoustic affair with a guitar attack for the chorus.
Not the albums heaviest moment but still hugely enjoyable and a chance for Owens to rest the
screams and wails to deliver a clean vocal. „Valley Forge“ is a bare knuckle Metal rid and to
finish with a mini epic in the shape of “Waterloo” which does nothing to diminish the ferocity
and onslaught of the ICED EARTH sound.
Which leads onto the thirty minute plus full scale epic „Gettysburg (1836)“. Metal is well
known for its complex, long and demanding songs but never in my Metal life have I heard anything
remotely as special or engrossing as this piece. It is truly magical and inspirational from
beginning to end. Split over three parts „Gettysburg (1836)“ manages to convey the horror
and desperation of the American Civil war when brother fought brother and father fought son.
It is a body of work that demands a better critique than I could ever hope to give it.
Gettysburg (1836)“ is without a doubt the finest piece of music ever written by Schaffer and
The Glorious Burden“ should be purchased solely on the strength of it. I cannot praise it highly enough

RESIST were first among the wave of new anarcho-punk bands that swept over
Portland, Oregon in the late 80's. Durign their brief existence they became
a fixture of the local DIY / anarchopunk movement and released several

the band, these debut recordings from Australia’s Sacriphyx were too

dark black metal predominantly building upon the classic Greek sound

songs articulate the struggle, despair, and valiance of the battle of

STATE OF THE UNION - To the Bitter End...A Discography CD (Profane Existence )
This discography disc includes five pulverizing new tracks (for an unreleased 12”
recorded in 2000) plus their self-titled LP and both EPs in their entirety. STATE
OF THE UNION played dark, introspective, and despair-driven gloom core in a style
that groups them with likes of DYSTOPIA, CHRISTDRIVER, ASBESTODEATH and even some
NEUROSIS and GODLESH. Originally formed in Rapid City, South Dakota, STATE OF THE
UNION toured the country extensively and were a staple feature of Minneapolis’
underground punk / crust shows during the mid-late 90’s. On the strength of their
live performances and their self-released debut EP, they were picked up by Profane
Existence Records, who released their Rez-Erection EP in 1995. Shortly after the
release of their second EP, the band sought to escape the dead-end scene of Rapid
City relocated as a unit to Seattle, Washington. Once settled they went to work
recording their first full length release, also released by Profane Existence in
1998. Although the first pressing of 1000 albums sold out in a matter of weeks,
it was never repressed due to a three-year hiatus of Profane Existence Records
from 1999-2002. The band recorded a second LP, slated for release in 2000, but
the project faltered without a label and STATE OF THE UNION disbanded shortly
thereafter. While STATE OF THE UNION remain one of the lesser known bands on Profane
Existence Records, they have one of the most fiercely loyal following even to this
date. Former SOTU members have no dropped out of the scene by any means and play on
today in several other Seattle area bands such as SOD HAULER, WORMWOOD, ARID SEA and
THE PRIDS. This CD is a long-overdue final testament and contains practically
everything they ever recorded and has a total run time is 79:45!

respectively. This is pop punk the way it's supposed to sound ? chunky,
full, free of the wimp and whine, cry-me-a-river-cheese-ball-crap that's
been passed off as punk for the last umpteen years. Imagine a more
beefy TRANZMITORS, a harder hitting GENTLEMEN JESSE, a poppier EXPLODING
HEARTS, and you'll be on the right track.

THREATENER - The Hammering, The Fastening, And The Bending Of Throats CD (625 Thrashcore)
Threatener were aural violence, plain and simple; jackhammering
thrashcore that had intensity that could not be faked, much less
duplicated. Had this band been around in '92 and released these tracks
on Slap a Ham, Threatener would be mentioned in the same breath as
Crossed Out and Capitalist Casualties for their genre defining sound.

TUSK - The Resisting Dreamers (clear/blue vinyl) LP VINYL (Hydra Head)
Tusk is a band that is hard to categorize. Sure, they are metal but what
kind of metal do you call this? Made up of Trevor de Brauw, Laurent
Schroeder-Lebuc, Larry Herweg (all from Pelican), and Evan Patterson (Young Widows), and Toby Driver (Kayo Dot)
you know you are in for some magic. I wouldn't exactly say that they
sound LIKE Pelican, even though they share 3 of the same members. Tusk
is a hell of a lot messier than Pelican and The Resisting Dreamer proves that in 4 songs.
You
can't get a more apt title than "Cold Twisted Aisle". It's dark, it's
angry, and it gets a little unruly at times. "Life's Denial" is the
shortest track at 5:58 but it's definitely epic. You feel like you've
been on a huge journey after listening to this one. Then comes the
magnum opus: "The Lewdness and Frenzy of Surrender" clocking in at
16:13. It's a massive song and worthy of every second. This beast is
probably the closest in style to Pelican with it's hypnotic
instrumental style.
There are some death metal
elements on Resisting Dreamer but not enough to warrant a death metal
classification. Some grindcore exists here as well but not enough to
declare Tusk a grindcore band. There are some similarities to Pelican
and Isis but Tusk is different enough to be categorized on their own.
The
Resisting Dreamer is one of this year's surprises. Not having heard of
Tusk before I had no expectations and this heavy little four song album
made my day.

ULTRA DOLPHINS - Mar (orange vinyl) LP VINYL (Robotic Empire)
Gods And Queens 3 piece band from Brooklyn/Philadelphia, who tried in
vain to blatantly steal riffs and song patterns from some of their
favorite bands, like Hoover, Rodan, The Telescopes, Angels Of Light,
June Of 44, Lowercase, Spaceman 3 and the like...but failed on every
attempt. Instead here are 7 songs that resemble nothing of who or what
they were intended to be. Instead a few have said it sounds like a low
rent super depressed version of Fugazi, and Quicksand with out the
start stop timing, which Jamie is NOT happy about at all, in any sort
of the word happiness. The lyrical content isn't nearly as good as
Jawbreaker. That's what happens when you don't write any lyrics until 5
min, before you're supposed to record vocals for the songs.
There is no target market audience for this record. There is no
marketing plan for this record. There is no advertising budget for this
record. There is no publicity for this record. No fancy name did the
art work, just some kid Doug Foulke, some dude Jason LaFarge (are
weapons, angels of light, devendra banhart) recorded it. The band will
probably tour the US, and Europe a few times, and break up after two
years. You'll be able to find this in the cut out bin real cheap in a
few years, save your money and re-buy it at a later date.
