ASEETHE / MAUUL - Navitas Est Deus (split) LP VINYL (Scenester Credentials)
Finally available to the world, the epic "Navitas Est Deus" split LP
as performed by Aseethe and Mauul. This release is a combination of two
of our favorite doomy experimental ambient noise artists. Although not
intended as a collaboration the record plays as one. Aseethe is one
man, Brian Barr (ex-Law of All Ends), playing structured distorted
electronic doom noise compositions. The Aseethe side of the split
features, Ill Omen, an 18 minute long song that falls somewhere in
between SUNN0))) and Jesu. When listening to Aseethe the listener is
wrapped in the power and dynamics of the bands compositions. Mauul is
the one man minimal noise and sound scape experimentation project of
Phil Mauul from Open Goat. The Mauul side of the split is noise / sound
experimentation at its best. Minimal to the point of non-existence and
layered with a powerful blend of electronic skronks, static, and noise
spanning 18 minutes in length. Scenester Credentials is very proud to

ATAVIST - II:Ruined 2xLP VINYL (GATEFOLD) (Aurora Borealis)
Having toured extensively in the UK
with both SUNN O))) and Khanate around 2004 - 2006, the band were
stalwarts of the growing extreme doom scene, and were widely hailed as
the next great UK hope. The self-titled debut album was one of its
kind: picture every negative emotion ever conceived, set to some of the
most crawling, painful, polarizing, and mesmerizing atmospheric
blackened sludge doom ever, and you’ll get a glimpse of the blackened
heart of Atavist. The band’s second album, II:Ruined, is a massive,
monolithic, introverted chapter of audial suffering and torment. It
sees Atavist plunge further into the audial abyss by incorporating more
layers and substance to their art (not unlike the way Japan’s Corrupted
portray their immaculate aesthetic). Heavier, more diverse, intricate,
and melodic, II:Ruined is just that; an unforgiving observation of
self-reflection, repentance, and desperation. With guest performances
from Justin Greaves, (ex-Iron Monkey, Crippled Black Phoenix), and dark
folk/rock/doomster Rose Kemp, (who's 'Unholy Majesty' LP saw release in
2008 on Aurora Borealis ), II:Ruined is a decidedly darker beast,
lurking in the shadows, evading the casual listener and rewarding the
devotee. It is interesting to note that this was the final album for
this line up of the band, one can only wonder at the self-fulfilling
prophecy of such and immense and bleak work. Perhaps its a wonder they
are all still alive. This double vinyl edition of II:Ruined on Aurora
Borealis marks a long overdue vinyl release for this important
milestone of extreme doom in the UK, and stands in monolithic testament
to their achievement.

your mother in law: the HEAVY ZOOO is coming to town. Freaks, wonders
and Animalia curiosities! They're here, they're real and they're alive!
Come ogle at the nine-headed sword-swallowing dragon, seek advice on
your own impending apocalypse from the prophecy machine, but proceed
with great care as the two-piece riff-machine called BEEHOOVER comes
firing ten new, hot molten rocks of doom, metal and stoner rock into an
astonished crowd near you! 
 
Their performances on tour with THE HIDDEN HAND and STINKING LIZAVETA
in 2007 left audiences with mouths gaping and the band overdosing on
adrenaline, which they channelled straight into their new album. It's
raw and angry, it makes you wanna smash your mothers' favourite china
and roll on the floor laughing at the same time. "Heavy Zooo" combines
these emotions and won't leave much time for taking breath. It's
complex, yet it makes you dance. It's four on the floor but it's not
disco. It's progressive but still pure rock for the masses. 
 
Unconventional circumstances helped in its creation: the album was
written at 6am over a couple of weeks, then recorded and produced in a
cinema before being mixed at the bands' own studio. The surreal artwork
has been chosen to meet the sound of the album perfectly. Have a look

BEN NASH - The Seventh Goodbye CD (Aurora Borealis)
So here it is: "The Seventh Goodbye". Clocking in at 34 minutes, its
not an overly long album, but rather one that demands repeated
listenings, a collage of so many layers, patterns and textures so as to
be as dazzling as the plummage of the finest peacock in paradise.
Musical elements as diverse as folk, raga, Eastern percussion, drone,
prog and noise collide and coalesce as the album unfolds, with each of
the eight tracks providing new twists and turns, with never an element
out of place. 
The slow beginning of opener 'KUAD 9873' is a drone and vocal drenched
movie score, chiming Western guitars building and dissolving in the sun
before we move into the more unforgiving nocturnal territory of 'Night
Call'; wind instruments trade cries with guitar scree, whispers and
piano. Title track 'The Seventh Goodbye' is largely guitar based, with
multiple tracks, rolling percussion, layered vocals and saxophone. That
this should all be the work of one man is quite astounding, and its
clear that comparisons with BEN CHASNY and VOICE OF THE SEVEN WOODS are
more than mere flattery. 'Resolution' plays counter point to the drama
of the previous track, a relatively short piece of solo guitar,
psychologically much lighter. 
'Smoke and Flattery' is largely percussive, with a variety of singing
bowls, shakers, gongs and cymbals, before a vocal drone, handclaps and
a simple bassline come in. Its perhaps the most Krautrock moment on the
album, reminiscent of POPOL VUH, before the rhythms and melody
dissipate into the ether as the track segues into 'Magnetophone 8
PtII', a slow building and intense piece with a fantastic distorted
guitar climax boiling over into a wash of reverb drone. ' What will
always be PtII' is the most beautiful track on the album, worthy of
JACK ROSE or any other of the current cream of the solo guitar raga
worshippers. No sooner have we grown accustomed to the beauty and light
however, we find ourselves in the company of 'Angel #7', alone in the
woods, the cries of the night creatures piercing the ringing in our
ears. Its a strange journey indeed, full of many conflicting emotions,
but one that you will instinctively take again and again. May it never
end.

BLACK MOTH SUPER RAINBOW - Eating Us CD (Graveface)
After a year of eerie, stilted
silence, the sun shines and the shadows reappear. Black Moth Super
Rainbow has crept from the forests and cities to make Eating Us, their
dark bubblegum freakout for 2009. The first fully hi-fi BMSR record,
Eating Us, adds space and dimension to the band's sticky, off-kilter
melodies. This isn't an album about witches and woods, and this time
around the band isn't letting on to what it all might mean. Because to
them, it's just better that way. The modern musical unit known as Black
Moth Super Rainbow first emerged from an obscure Pennsylvania forest
glen in 2003 to relay a somewhat confounding sound with Falling Through
a Field. Over the next few years, that peculiar sound developed, and
the cult of BMSR began. With the release of their naturally sweetened,
candy-coated, and acclaimed 2007 treat, Dandelion Gum, a number of
curious listeners bent their ears and adjusted their listening habits
to incorporate Black Moth Super Rainbow’s oddly creepy and off-beat
sweet audio plyings. With support slots opening for Flaming Lips and
Aesop Rock, the oft-camera shy outfit was soon positioned in front of
thousands of brand new sonically adventurous music enthusiasts who
weren't necessarily prepared for the eccentric visuals of BMSR's
surreal live show, but would hopefully emerge changed, and be better
off for it. 
 
Their new full length presentation for 2009, Eating Us, promises to up
the ante on the fidelity and melodies that BMSR have become known for.
Here, the merry cryptic band has added some new flavors to their
already well-established rainbow of sounds, with even more dense layers
of lushly complex orchestration, intensely rhythmic drumming from a
live, human drummer, vocoder vocals that are anything but robotic, and
thick, 
undulating bass tones. Recorded at Tarbox Road Studios, Eating Us marks
the first time BMSR has ventured into a modern recording studio.
Production and partial tracking were handled by Dave Fridmann (The
Flaming Lips, MGMT, Weezer) whose hands and ears were the only ones
trusted to keep the freaked out wiggles and hairy candies fully
in-tact, while also expanding them in a more realistic space. 
 
Now a six piece, BMSR could come or go at any time, however 2009 promises a return to touring.

BURIAL HEX - Initiations CD (Aurora Borealis)
"Initiations", the debut recording for Aurora Borealis, is a lengthy
proposition. Clocking in at one hour, thirteen minutes, it represents a
journey, a metaphysical odyssey of uncertain outcome. From the
psycho-religious clamour of 'Will to the chapel' with its jihadic
cries, through to the somnambulant, subterranean oscillations of 'Eight
pentacles', the way ahead is far from clear, the atmosphere
claustrophobic and threatening. 
'The river of Los' showcases a new breadth of vision for Burial Hex
with layers of undulating analogue synth and gentle percussion, an
opiate addled take on the horror electronics hinted at previously, and
perhaps an indication of things to come. This long track takes the
listener on a river journey, part Apocalypse Now!, part Orpheus in the
Underworld, submerged in Carpenter's dense Fog, slow moving discomfort
and ague. The album ends with the half speed collisions, static miasma
and white noise squawl of 'Bo -II- Ne', the listener deposited on
shores unknown, prostrate at the feet of the infinite mystery. 
 
Burial Hex has surpassed all expectation with "Initiations": Kneel, o
ye acolytes, before an astral-industrial opus of vast depth and occult
magnitude.

nurturing this project in Montreal since the demise of their respective
bands, Unicorns and Les Angles Morts. As a member of the short-lived
Unicorns, Penner's songwriting prowess was unveiled in a bright burst
of mysterious and kaleidoscopic energy, in the form of a single
full-length album (released in 2003) and countless live shows, both of
which rallied passionate responses from audiences and critics alike. 
 
Penner's voice, guitar and unique lyrical vision now guide Clues, with
humble authority, originality and intent. Wedded to Reed's own
superlative compositional and arranging acumen (and awesome drumming,
among other instrumental skills) and abetted by multi-instrumentalists
Ben Borden (Les Automates de Maxime de la Rochefoucauld), Lisa Gamble
(Gambletron, Evangelista, Hrsta) and Nick Scribner (Chaotic
Insurrection Ensemble), the band delivered sporadic and fantastic local
performances through 2008. They then entered the Hotel2Tango studio to
lay down eleven songs in a feverish session during a Montréal winter
deep freeze. The resulting album radiates a very special warmth and
urgency, full of secrets, smiles, snarls and sing-a-longs. 
 
This debut record yields one undeniable tune after another. It is one
of those albums that coheres effortlessly in spite of the restless
energy and distinct identity of each song – nothing ever really sounds
or stays the same, but neither are there any forced spastics or facile
schizophrenics. Forged from postpunk, no-wave and psych influences,
Clues compose a rare breed of complex pop anthems that consistently
inscribe their own perfect limits, without overreaching and without
pandering. The overriding aesthetic avoids ornate decadence and
stringent economy in equal measure. An authentic, unfussy and
stirringly epic little sonic world unfolds: idiosyncratic and
enigmatic, but exuberantly infectious and approachable.

Aurora Borealis is proud to present
long-time faves HEAVY WINGED on limited vinyl with the 'Shaking,
waking' LP. The band have been consistently impressing us since we
first heard them back in 2006 and we are very happy to have snagged
them for this release before tagging them and releasing them back into
the wild. 
 
The 'Shaking, waking' LP consists of two lengthy tracks: 'Tidal
Blackness' is a 23 minute cloud of improvised guitar and bass drone,
underpinned with sparse percussive elements and dappled with the rays
of ethereal melodies. This track, recorded live in Oakland in 2008,
represents the more gentle side of HEAVY WINGED in some ways and is
largely soothing. The second side harbours 'Morning Flesh', 18 minutes
that veer towards the caveman Krautrock of the recent 'Alive in my
mouth' LP, drums pounding, Neanderthal guitar chugging, though with a
melodic haze drifting across the musical landscape like a lysergic
mistral, leading the listener ever further into the shifting sands of
the forbidden zone. 
 
HEAVY WINGED have set the controls for the heart of the unknown.

JOURNEY TO IXTLAN - Journey To Ixtlan CD (Aurora Borealis)
Journey To Ixtlan are a band who draw together doom metal with desert
rock in an unholy (and most likely metaphorical) sonic dustbowl,
populated only by threads of tumbleweed and harsh, spiny cacti - but
the tumbleweed is tumbleweed of pain and the cactus is a cactus of
despair. Oh cripes, I just can't churn out this psych-metal parlance
like the pros do. The Aurora Borealis press release blurb for this
album is far more informative and pretty entertaining to boot: "Journey
To Ixtlan are an anonymous badass rock band of desert dwellers, in some
cases living outside the law at the very margins of society, who
converge infrequently to render their physical surroundings in
psychotropic sound. Their heavy sound owes as much to Doom Metal as it
does to Psychedelia, as much to Now as it does to Then, as guitar,
bass, drums, keys and vocal chants intertwine like shamanic smoke. To
listen to Journey To Ixtlan is to participate in a ritual out of time,
to tread the path of Don Juan, to lay on the mesa as a 'man of power'
and be touched by the sun at the heart of the cosmic stage." Ace.

K11 - Voices From Thelema CD (Aurora Borealis)
K11 is a project of Italian
sound/installation artist Pietro Riparbelli that deals with the world
of radio signals, trans-communication and other invisible phenomena, to
create a dimension where the only sound sources are signals from
shortwave radio receivers. When constructing works under the K11
project, Riparbelli uses only 
sounds from the atmosphere and from invisible, unknown sources. In this
way, Riparbelli creates more esoteric works than his field recording
based material as PT-R, and Voices From Thelema is perhaps the logical
conclusion of such an enterprise. Voices from Thelema is an
instrumental trans-communication action with short wave radio receivers
realized inside Thelema Abbey in Cefalù, October 14, 2007. The ruined
building stands derelict and on the verge of collapse, though still
holds many secrets and has been a focus for much counter cultural
activity since its foundation by Aleister Crowley in 1920 as a
religious centre and commune where he could instruct disciples in his
emerging Thelemic religion and systems of magick in a rural atmosphere,
far from the overpowering prevailing morality of England. Activities
included meditation and ritual magick, as well as the sensationalised
drug taking and sex magick. The wall of many of the rooms were painted
with fantastic murals by Crowley himself, depicting many of the
elementals and demons encountered in his magickal exercises, and the
remains of many of these adorn the accompanying booklet. After being
ejected from Italy following scandal and outcry over the goings on at
the Abbey, the walls were whitewashed and destroyed. Filmmaker Kenneth
Anger, himself a devotee of Crowley, later uncovered and filmed some of
its murals in his film 'Thelema Abbey' (1955), now considered lost, and
the Abbey has been a place of pilgrimage for many ever since. 
 
K11 now revisits this site and seeks to uncover the genius loci, the
very essence of the building itself, to reach out into the ether and
construct meaning and reality from that which is beyond our grasp. The
three tracks are the result of this work and, each bearing titles of
Thelemic significance, can be said to hold the essence of all that 
remains at Cefalu, like the background radiation that tells of the Big Bang.

"L'Acephale is based on the ideas and motivations of the early 20th
century artistic, philosophic, esoteric secret circle and journal of
the same name. Most prominent amongst its members was Georges Bataille,
whose writings gave life-blood to that, and this project. Acephale's
etymology is from the Latin a-cephalus, meaning headless or without a
chief. The motivations? Religion. Sociology. Philosophy & The
Sacred Conjuration. An ensemble fiercely religious in a Nietzschean
manner, currently resurrected in this incarnation fusing equal portions
epistemic terrorism and literary atavism, basing its transmission in
the combination of both black metal and folk elements while also
including the experimentism and ambience of both these genres. 
Conceived initially by Set Sothis Nox La in 2003 on a steady diet of
Wolfthorn, Les Joyeux De La Princesse, Corrupted, Toroidh, Hate Forest,
Drudkh, Krzysztof Penderecki, Veljo Tormis, Henryk Mikolaj Gorecki,
Huun Huur Tu, A.V.A and various Tibetan and world folk musics in the
cauldron of ceremonial birth. This project currently embodies several
co-conspirators building on that foundation with additional elements:
bacchanalian percussion, Volkisch metal tinges and multi-vocal assault.
Finding further insight from such luminaries as the thelemic prankster
Kenneth Grant, Heathen epics such as The Eddas and The Sagas, romantic
writings (such as Ludwig Tieck, Georg Heym, Georg Trakl amongst
others), the Kosmischer Kreis (Alfred Schuler, Stefan George, Karl
Wolfskehl) and the writings of the french decadents - surrealistic
writers like Latreaumont and Unica Zurn. As well as writings related to
Ouilipo (aka "Ouvroir de literature otentielle") and authors such as
Robert Walser, Bruno Schulz, Rene Daumal, Clark Ashton Smith, Arthur
Machen and James Havoc. To the films of Ingmar Bergman and the Brothers
Quay, and such artists as Hans Bellmer, Suehiro Maruo, Andre Masson,
Frantisek Kupka, Franz Von Stuck and the great Austin Osman Spare. 
While celebrating such folkways and beliefs prior to this modern era,
be they Odinist, Druidic, Chod or many other belief systems wherein the
balance of everyday life remains close to the earth: Life not separate
from spirituality, but a spirituality infused with the base material.
Not the "as above, so below" philosophy of Hermetic thought where one
spiritual entity reigns above, but closer to the concept of Radical
Traditionalism. Our philosophies, perhaps best quantified with the
Bataillean statement that we stand as "a war machine against received

Marginal Man was formed in 1983 after the break-up of Artificial Peace, a seminal dc HC punk band.
Featuring former AP members Steve Polcari, Pete Murray, and Mike Manos, and joined with Kenny Inouye
and Andre Lee, Marginal Man released one EP (Identity), and two LPs (Double Image and Marginal Man),
along with a couple of appearances on compilations (Alive and Kicking, and State of the Union). During the
band's five and a half year existence they toured North America twice, toured extensively up and down the
east coast, and played numerous shows in the DC area, culminating in a farewell show on March 24, 1988
with two sold out sets at the 930 Club.
“Identity” was recorded in 1983 by Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studios and was originally
released as a 12” EP in 1984. Although “Identity” was re-issued on CD in 1997 the vinyl has been out of print
for many years. In 2009 Dischord sent the tapes to be re-mastered at Chicago Mastering Service and we will
be re-issuing the 12” EP, along with an MP3 download, in May 2009.

MARZURAAN / TEN-HORNED BEAST - Marzuraan / Ten-Horned Beast (split) CD (Aurora Borealis)
Some fresh auditory malevolence from Aurora Borealis, this time in the
form of a split album from North Eastern harbingers of doom
TenHornedBeast and Marzuraan. The first piece takes on an elongated,
sinister drone, clocking up almost half an hour of distant, echoing
string resonance from bowed guitars and cold, steely walls of
distortion. The next track is roughly half the length, taking on a more
song-like structure, with recognisable instrumentation coming together
for a quarter-hour or so of curious shoegazing doom. It's a little like
Jesu without the vocals and electronic soundscaping, just acres of
textured guitar, low end pressure and brooding drums. An odd
juxtaposition of styles, but an intriguing diversion from Aurora
Borealis' more customary output.

MOUNT EERIE - Dawn (white vinyl) LP VINYL (P.W. Elverum And Sons)
The music of “Mount Eerie” and “The
Microphones” has always been a very personal, almost voyeuristic, view
inside the mind of Phil Elverum. Dawn is an archival core sample from
an intensely creative period of Elverum’s life, the winter of 2002/2003
spent in arctic Norway, a kind of “lost album” finally properly
recorded on just guitar and singing. It is being released in 2 pretty
different forms. One, a 144 page hardcover book of journal writing
chronicling a winter spent alone in a cabin, wrestling with ghosts,
gathering wood, acting out the myths; 3 months of unfiltered brain
torrents interspersed with drawings and including a 19 track CD of
songs written during that time, as well as 16 color photo cards. It is
bound in simulated “wood” paper. It feels like holding a piece of wood. 
The other format is a simple white vinyl LP of those songs along with a
special booklet of scary self portraits done in the dark window
reflection in overflowing ink, vaguely corresponding to the overflowing
darkness in the 19 songs.

SILVESTER ANFANG - Kosmies Slachtafval CD (Aurora Borealis)
The Flanders-based Funeral Folk collective convene to become occult
drone rock band Sylvester Anfang, a self-proclaimed 'Pagan Belgopsych'
group featuring a line-up that boasts a member named Ignatius Van
Kempenhof. They almost certainly get involved in live role playing
games too, but all you really need to know about this record is that
it's the group's debut album and it's a rollicking good listen. Across
two lengthy pieces the band align themselves with the more far-out
tendencies of Acid Mother Temple or perhaps even Sunburned Hand Of The
Man unshackled from their more Woodstock-oriented tendencies. In
amongst all the shifting textures and sinister wailing sounds you'll
hear a jumble of campfire percussion and the kind of organ playing you
might last have heard on an Italian horror movie soundtrack. Oddly,
there's a bit of a devotional, trance-inducing quality to this music,
and you most certainly wouldn't want to accept a glass of grape
flavoured Kool-Aid from them, but this album is well worth donning a
robe for.

and driving the Industrial Revolution. It was then that James Hutton,
the first geologist, began to consider the depths beneath our feet and

deep time. 
The Other Side Of The Island is the soundtrack to the sculptural works
collected under the same name, both being the work of David J Smith. In
addition to his percussion duties with Guapo, Smith has spent the last
two years bringing his visions to life; life that emerged slowly,
painstakingly, out of wax, coal, copper and lead. In much the same way,
the soundtrack itself slowly writhes organically before the listener:
the groan of the motherlode, the shifting of tectonic plates, the song
of the Earth's crust. In collaboration with longstanding musical cohort

Of Dead Horses) and audio engineer Antti Uusumaki, Smith has created a
strange work comprising of layered vocals, percussion, electronics and

AMEBIX - Monolith (import) CD (Heavy Metal)
In the mid-to-late `80s, dozens of HC and punk bands released the
often-cursed “heavy metal second or third LP.” From what I had read, Monolith
was almost universally derided as Amebix’s dreaded “metal album”: a
straight-up collection of thrash tunes that paled in comparison to the
crust-defining Arise!. Upon actually hearing the album, it’s a relief to discover that Monolith is no How We Rock, Do We Really Want to Hurt You? or Grave New World.
Amebix’s already metallic style, which originally consisted of
drunk-punk takes on the simplest Venom and Celtic Frost / Hellhammer
riffs, doesn’t lose much with the minimal added soloing and metal
beats. There is a little added speed, which takes away somewhat from
the heaviness of the music, but sporadic D-beats make the album a
little more varied. Monolith isn’t the instant classic that Arise! was, but it’s a very good crossover album that’s firmly rooted in anarcho-punk ethics.

PSYOPUS - Odd Senses CD (Metal Blade)
Rochester, New York's Psyopus play "technical metal," meaning that
every time signature shift, drum fill, and guitar note is planned and
timed down to the second. Which also means ODD SENSES is an impressive
feat on both a metal and a mathematical level.
On "Medusa," it's the precise, speed-of-light guitar theatrics by
Christopher Arp that most impress; they're so exactly honed that they
sound almost electronic. On tracks like "Duct Tape Smile," drummer
Jason Bauers exercises his own kind of brutal efficiency. This might
sound clinical, but it's all balanced by Brian Woodruff's furious,
impassioned screaming.
